4K content is developing rapidly. Earlier this year, Netflix and Amazon already started to collaborate with TV manufacturers to enable streaming of 4K video. A few months ago, 20th Century Fox and Samsung did the same for the Hollywood studio's 4K content. In the near future, we are expecting the arrival of Blu-ray for 4K.

4k
What is Ultra HD/4K?

4K refers to an image resolution of approx. 4,000 pixels in the horizontal direction. That is an approximate number because there are different aspect ratios. The most common is 3840 by 2160 pixels. This resolution has 2x the width and 2x the height of Full HD (1920 by 1080 pixels). This means 4K contains four times as much image information as Full HD. On smaller screens, you will see no difference at a normal viewing distance from the television. 4K really comes into its own with an actual film experience. This applies to TVs or projection screens starting at 55".

CinemaRooms
Bridging the distance to the screen

Sometimes your media player or the equipment you use to stream the (Ultra) HD content, cannot be placed near the TV or projector.
An example is when a projector is mounted on the ceiling.
Or perhaps you have your media player in the living room and occasionally want to transfer the signal to a room you have turned into a home theatre.

Which solutions are available then?

  • An HDMI cable. Unfortunately, this may result in interference from 10 metres upwards.
  • A wireless HDMI transmitter. Unfortunately, walls and other obstacles limit the range considerably in this case.
  • A network cable and a Marmitek MegaView.
A network cable and a Marmitek MegaView

A network cable is the ideal cable to send an (ultra) HD signal over a greater distance. There is no loss of quality, the cable is easy to pull and costs only 20 Euro cents per metre.
However, to get the HDMI signal onto a network cable, you need a signal converter. With Ultra HD images, you need the Marmitek MegaView 121.

Even if you are currently not planning to buy an Ultra HD projector, UHDTV or UHDTV subscription, the MegaView 121 is 'best of class' within the AV over CAT5 extenders category.

This is because it:

  • sends the HD signal over distances of up to 60 metres and the 4K signal up to 40 metres;
  • sends the signal over HDBaseT without compression and loss of quality;
  • also supports full HD and all 3D formats;
  • supports the latest audio formats, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio;
  • enables remote operation of your equipment by the infra-red return feature;
  • only uses 1 network cable to send the signal;
  • works with any A/V device with an HDMI output (e.g. a TV decoder, Media Center PC, Blu-ray player or HDD recorder) and any TV or projector with an HDMI input.

This means that even when you are away from your equipment, you, as a film enthusiast, are guaranteed the highest possible resolution and you will not miss any more details.

Technically, HDMI is able to cross a distance of 10 metres through an HDMI cable, with no visible loss of quality. Wirelessly, this is already possible up to 30 metres, but only without any obstacles. What if you want to extend the signal by more than 30 metres, or need to pass through an obstacle, such as a wall? If you already happen to have a home network, you can choose the MegaView 81. Obstacles are not a problem; it extends the signal to 100 metres and costs about half the price of a wireless solution.

Marmitek MegaView 81
MegaView 81

Today, Marmitek introduces the MegaView 81, for transmitting HDMI over CAT5/6.
It allows you to extend the transfer of HD content (Full HD 1080p) up to 100 metres from your Digital TV, Media Center PC, game console or hard disk recorder, and view it elsewhere on a TV or projector screen.

How does it work?

You use an HDMI cable to connect your HDMI device to the MegaView 81's transmitter. This transfers the HD signal to a CAT5/6 cable or home network (LAN), allowing you to use a MegaView 81 receiver to pick up the signal elsewhere. Use an HDMI cable to connect your TV or beamer to it. Using the infrared return feature, you can control the connected device from the TV.

Marmitek MegaView 81 application
Usage

A lot of new houses are increasingly being equipped with a CAT5 network. Now, this can be easily used for transmitting HDMI, for example, to the bedroom TV, the loft or the conservatory. Or you can always lay a cable yourself, of course.

Advantages
  • Easily connects to your home network (LAN) using TCP/IP protocol.
  • A CAT5 cable costs only a fraction of an HDMI cable.
  • A CAT5 cable has little or no loss of quality, not even over longer distances.
  • HDMI cables can be tricky to guide through conduits (e.g. because they are inflexible and the connectors are non-removable). With CAT5 cable, this is much easier.
  • The use of an HDMI switcher allows you to transfer signals from multiple HD devices to the MegaView 81 transmitter.
  • The CAT5 network may already be in use for other purposes.

You have changed from an analogue cable subscription to digital TV. Suddenly you have 50 or 90 channels instead of 30, some of which are also supplemented with a pay-tv package. You can now enjoy this from the comfort of your living room but on the 2nd TV in your bedroom you are still stuck with the 30 channels you used to have. How can you get the full range of channels and all of the functions such as Missed Programmes, Digital VCR and so on in your bedroom without paying for an extra subscription or purchasing another decoder? You can with the MegaView series from Marmitek! In addition, you can also operate your set-top box from your bedroom.

What type of cable?
An RCA, SCART or HDMI cable is usually used for audio and video transfer. These cables, however, have certain limitations:

  • Great lengths of these cables are often very expensive;
  • The image quality reduces significantly over longer distances;
  • It is impossible to fit the connector yourself, particularly with HDMI cables. As a result, big holes must often be drilled in order to get the cable and the connector through to where you need it;
  • It is not easy to get in the right lengths.
What people often do not realise is that a CAT5 cable is also perfectly suitable for transferring broadband (HD) audio and video signals and that this, actually, offers a number of advantages. This cable is already widely used in large, professional A/V installations.

What is a CAT5 cable?Patch cable

You will often come across the CAT5 cable (also referred to as UTP or network cable), in combination with the well-known RJ45 connector as a connection between PC and network (router) or between data networks and data equipment. You may even already have a data network at home that uses this type of cable. A dedicated CAT5 cable is also used for extending video.

Why CAT5 cable?
There are several notable advantages to using this type of cable:

  • Little or no loss of quality;
  • Can be used over long distances;
  • Suitable for both SD and HD Audio/Video signals;
  • Relatively cheap and widely available;
  • You can fit the plugs yourself, meaning that
    • you can use whatever cable length is required,
    • the cable can easily be installed using a PVC tube,
    • the holes that need to be drilled are smaller;
  • the cable is relatively thin and supple and can easily be hidden.

What else do you need?
MegaView Serie You cannot plug the RJ45 directly into your TV or A/V equipment. Marmitek, as specialist within the sphere of audio/video transfer, is therefore introducing several products to the market that allow Standard Definition (composite) as well as High Definition (HDMI) signal to be transferred over CAT5 cable. These are:

  • The MegaView50, for watching Composite Video over CAT5 at up to 300m.
  • The MegaView51, for watching and operating Composite Video over CAT5 at up to 300m.
  • The MegaView60, for watching HDMI over CAT5 at up to 60m.
  • The MegaView61, for watching and operating HDMI over CAT5 at up to 100m.

MegaView

How does it work?
A set-top box has numerous outputs. You connect the local TV to one of the set-top box’s outputs. The other output is connected to the video transmitter. You can also use a splitter. You place the required CAT5 cable(s) between the video transmitters’ transmitter and receiver. The video transmitters with infrared return (only MegaView 51 and MegaView 61) also have an infrared receiver that you can, for example, stick under your TV, and an infrared LED that you can then stick to the connected source. This allows you to operate the decoder from different places in your home.

Watching your SD or HD content on a TV located elsewhere has never been so simple!
